Overview
A unique temple dedicated to Lord Pishach Mochan (a form of Shiva) that is believed to cure those afflicted by evil spirits, mental disturbances, and negative energies.
The Ancient Story
Pishach Mochan Temple is a unique shrine in Ujjain, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as 'Pishach Mochan'—the one who releases (moksha) from pishachas (evil spirits/demons). The temple is deeply rooted in the lore of tantric and folk traditions of the Malwa region. According to folklore, a powerful demon named Pishach was terrorizing the people of Ujjain. He would possess people and drive them to madness. The people, in desperation, prayed to Lord Shiva. Shiva, in his compassionate form, appeared and subdued the demon, transforming him into a protector spirit. Shiva then established himself as Pishach Mochan at this spot, vowing to protect the people from all evil and negative forces. Another story says that a sage named Vishwamitra, after being cursed by a demon, came here to be liberated from the curse. He performed severe penance and was freed by the grace of Pishach Mochan. The temple has since become a refuge for those suffering from mental health issues, possession, and unexplained illnesses.
Spiritual Importance
Pishach Mochan Temple holds a special place in the hearts of locals and tantric practitioners. It is believed to be a powerful site for healing from mental disturbances, psychological disorders, and negative spiritual influences. Devotees suffering from chronic nightmares, unexplained fears, or family discord often visit here to seek relief. The temple is also known for its unique rituals, including the offering of mustard oil and black sesame seeds, which are believed to ward off evil. The deity is also worshipped by those seeking to overcome the effects of black magic and curses. The temple's significance extends to the field of mental health, as it provides a spiritual dimension to healing. Many people come here during the Navratri and Shravan months to perform special pujas. The temple's belief system is deeply intertwined with the local culture, where it serves as a vital resource for addressing mental and spiritual ailments.
Architecture
The temple is a small but well-maintained structure, built in a simple Nagara style. The sanctum houses a Shiva linga, which is anointed with mustard oil. The temple complex also includes a small shrine dedicated to the fierce form of Bhairav and a sacred pond. The walls are adorned with protective yantras and symbols.
