Overview
One of the 51 Shakti Peethas, Harsiddhi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is one of the most revered temples in Ujjain, known for its two unique lamp pillars.
The Ancient Story
Harsiddhi Temple is one of the three Shakti Peethas in Ujjain, alongside Mahakaleshwar and Kal Bhairav. According to mythology, when Lord Vishnu cut the body of Sati (Dakshayani) with his Sudarshan Chakra to stop Shiva's Tandava dance, her elbow fell at this exact spot. This made it a Shakti Peetha – a place of immense power. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Harsiddhi, the bestower of happiness and victory. The name ''Harsiddhi'' means ''the one who gives happiness and siddhis.'' It is said that Goddess Durga appeared here to bless King Vikramaditya, granting him victory in all his battles. The temple finds mention in the Skanda Purana and Vamana Purana. The original structure is attributed to King Vikramaditya, and it was later renovated and expanded by the Marathas in the 18th century. The two deepstambhas (lamp pillars) are believed to have been installed by the Scindia rulers. The temple also has a deep connection with the Navratri festival, during which the goddess is worshipped in her nine forms.
Spiritual Importance
As a Shakti Peetha, Harsiddhi Temple holds immense spiritual significance. It is believed that worshipping here fulfills all desires and brings happiness, prosperity, and success. The temple is particularly powerful for those seeking relief from planetary doshas and negative influences. The two 'Deepstambhas' (lamp pillars) are a unique feature – huge pillars covered with hundreds of oil lamps that are lit on special occasions, creating a breathtaking sight. Devotees believe that lighting a lamp here with a pure heart gets their prayers answered quickly. The temple is a major pilgrimage site for Durga devotees and is especially crowded on Tuesdays and Fridays. The presence of the goddess here is believed to be so powerful that even a single visit can change one's fortune.
Architecture
The temple features a blend of Nagara and Maratha architectural styles. The main sanctum houses the idol of Goddess Harsiddhi in a seated posture, flanked by idols of Kali and Saraswati. The two deepstambhas are the most striking feature, rising high above the temple courtyard, each adorned with hundreds of niches for oil lamps. The temple has a large assembly hall (mandapa) with intricately carved pillars. The walls are decorated with murals depicting scenes from the Durga Saptashati.
